ILA Local 1804-1
Training Facilities
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) 1804-1 represents longshore workers in the Maintenance and Repair teams at the Port Newark Container Terminal and offers training relevant to offshore wind related careers. In partnership with the Shipping Association of New York and New Jersey (NYSA), training is conducted at the SANYNJ-ILA-PPGU Training Center. This includes terminal-specific equipment training through Marine Terminal Operators and equipment-specific instruction from ILA trainers. Members are supported in meeting OSHA (Occupational Occupational Safety and Health Administration) training, USCG (United States Coast Guard), and other regulatory training requirements. Additional classroom instruction covers new hire orientation, hazardous materials handling, workplace security awareness, and vessel gang training, along with specialized security officer courses for PPGU members. Through its partnership with the Metropolitan Marine Maintenance Contractor’s Association, Inc. (MMMCA), ILA 1804-1 also offers over 40 courses in critical maintenance disciplines such as electrical work, hydraulics, welding, refrigeration, and automotive maintenance. These courses range from foundational skills to advanced technology, supporting both regulatory certification in industry best practices, including hazardous communication, National Fire Protection Association compliance, EPA refrigerant handling, and power industrial truck operations. Under its Master Contract with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) LTD., ILA members also receive periodic training and re-certifications for operating and handling wheeled equipment, cranes, and other machinery. These programs ensure Local 1804-1 members are well-prepared for roles in offshore wind projects, particularly in the handling, assembly, and maintenance of large-scale components.
